It’s OK to be…
It's great when us illustrators get to use our creative powers for good and that's exactly what Sam Holland got to do with this series of lovely posters for Plymouth Devon Racial Equality Council and Youth Group South West. Sam was brought in to work with a group of youths based in Plymouth, who had been conducting peer research on inclusivity and equality within the city, as part of a 5 year peer youth research project titled, "Authorising Your Own Stories".
The research was expanded across Manchester, London, York and Plymouth, allowing young people to explore the barriers in identity to accessing civic spaces.
It's okay to be...
Sam got involved in workshops with the Youth Group, and together came up with the idea of creating three posters centred around a core theme of, "it's okay to be". Each poster would focus on a different aspect of the theme, but work together as a series to create a collective message that reflected the research and positive message they wanted to spread.
The final designs were presented in the council chambers in Plymouth and will be distributed and displayed in schools across the South West and UK as part of a lengthy advertising campaign.
An awesome project and must have been a real rewarding one for Sam to use his talent to promote equality across many different social subjects. In a world full of a lot of aversion and hate, it's great that these might inspire young people to be more open minded and accepting of different groups of people.
